I originally bought the BabyDan No Trip but it was far too small for the width of the stairs. This BabyDan caters for a wide range of stair widths. If you install it properly and take your time then it is a great product. It is easy to open with one hand & feels secure. If installing on stairs:- With fully assembled gate (&threaded bolts) – align to rough position making sure you position at a height & width where both sides of the gate will be against flat surface (especially stair banister).- Mark area for installing bottom hinge side wall attachment. Use spirit level or square to ensure holes level. Drill and install this wall attachment. If you are putting the hinge side in a plaster wall then make sure you use appropriate wall plugs.- Fit the gate to bottom hinge and mark out the top hinge. Before drilling make sure your hole markings are level with the bottom hinge (you don’t want a slanted gate!). Fit top hinge using wall plugs too if necessary.- Fit gate to wall hinges. Use spirit level to make sure gate is level on top. If not then adjust the thread lengths as necessary.- Once gate is level, mark up where the wall fixings go on the ‘lock’ side. Fit these and you’re done.THINGS TO BE CAREFUL OF:Fit the hinge side 1st. Otherwise you may find that when you lift the gate up you can’t clear the lock side. You’ll then have to redrill more holes.

Flexible width to suit doorways and stairs, to hallways and wider entrances. I like that these fix to the walls/frames securely, and because they’re suspended without the need for an outer frame the opening is wider and there is no built in threshold to trip over. I bought this one for my daughters apartment; entrance through the front door takes you straight up stairs to the apartment so I wanted something permanently fixed with no threshold.Temporary removal is simple; just one toolless retainer to remove and the gate lifts straight off its mountings and can be just as easily refitted. This is useful for when you don’t need the gate in place. One thing to consider VS a compression-fit type gate is that you need to physically screw this in to mount it, so when you want to permanently remove the gate and its fixings you’ll have some holes to fill and paint. If you’re planning on mounting this to a surface that is wallpapered you may want to reconsider, unless the removal of the gate coincides with redecorating!

Second Babydan stairgate I’ve bought as I was so impressed with the first. This is the “multidan” extending version…I had the fixed width one before. Fitted a 2″ batten on the wall each side………. it looks nicer I reckon and the batten also makes it a lot easier to fit the screws as I was only going into wood. When you open the fittings pack, be careful with the “piece” that locks/unlocks the gate……. if you press it when it’s not mounted, it comes apart and you can easily lose the small plastic “plate” and spring….. in fact in my box, it had already come apart and I was wondering where this spring and plate had come from. Its a bit fiddly to fit so don’t rush it…………… I’m pretty good with DIY and with fixing/painting the batten, a good couple of hours. works beautifully… feels pretty sturdy………. easy to open for adults but difficult for toddlers. Template works well for the hinge side………… make sure they’re positioned correctly and there won’t be any problems that some people seem to have experienced with it lifting off the hinges. I didn’t bother with the template for the other side……….. just swing the gate across, with the 2 sections bolted together in the final positions, to the “closed” position………….. then position the top/bottom supports so they sit correctly in the gate supports, mark their exact position and screw them in place. I have read of people just using the template and the gate has been slightly twisted so they then had to reposition and redrill all the holes.

Bought this stair gate to stop my dog, as a pressured baby gate wasn’t fitting properly on my stairs.I usually always buy branded baby gates and I had never heard of babydan and was reluctant to buy anything I hadn’t used before. But now that I’ve tried this design I’ll be buying this baby Dan type from now on, instead of the traditional branded baby gate.1. For the price your getting a really wide gate which can also be adjusted if you decide to move it to another space or move house. Compared with an alternative branded baby gate I have, which required an expensive extender to fit in the same space, but it’s fixed and can’t be adjusted.2. The branded baby gate had a metal bar at its base which is a trip hazard especially at the top of stairs. This baby Dan design has no trip risk.3. I didn’t use the template to attach the wall mountings and measured myself instead but the gate is very easy to put together4. The wall mounting parts are made of strong plastic not metal, and the frame is solid metal. It feels alot more secure than a pressured baby gate, which can slip off the wall. The screws from babydan could have been bigger but you can always use your own bigger screws5. You can also use the gate at an angle, which Is really useful as the pressured baby gates seem to only work when they are attached straight

I needed a stair gate for bottom of stairs to stop my far too active toddler who’s obsessed with going where he shouldn’t. Unfortunately due to the opening being too wide and have an immediate bend, a pressure stair gate just wouldn’t work and most stair gates weren’t wide enough. This adjustable gate is brilliant. It fits well and due to the design can be fitted at right angles (I’m hoping all my images have uploaded ok to help demo)The only change to fitting instructions was I had to adjust the height due to skirting board being in the way on one side. The pros:- easy to fit- solid- can be removed when not needed without any tools- can be fitted at angle (straightforward when 90 degrees, and I’ve seen from other posters that other angles can be accommodated by make wooden wedges)- adjustable for wider/narrower openingsThe cons:- screw holes (saying that, it’s only small holes and for the peace of mind of having a solid fitted stair gate I don’t mind having to do a minor bit of repair with filler when I remove the gate eventually; and the pressure gates I have elsewhere have removed paint anyway so this is much of a muchness)DISCLAIMER – The way I’ve fitted the gate isn’t covered in manufacturer instructions, and you never know might be contrary to safety regs, so make your own assessment on whether you feel it safe to do the same. The main consideration for me given the gate’s positioning is whether my toddler would try to wedge himself underneath and damage himself somehow; I’d imagine it could somehow be a choke hazard with the wrong gap, but I’ve checked and he definitely can’t fit his head under so no issues there. Please do be careful though, and check with someone more knowledgeable than an Amazon reviewer.Overall, a brilliant product for a brilliant price.

Used as a baby gate at the top of stairs, not wanting to use a pressure fitting gate on uprights. This gate is signifcantly more work to fit (than a ‘normal’ gate), and is more perminent, due to hard fixed hinges and latches, but is solid in use. Note that it won’t automatically lock itself. This gate has 4 separate parts to attach (2 hinge peices and 2 latches). The gate is then sized and fixed onto the hinges, before being adjusted to mount tightly into the latch sides. It’s a bit of faff with all the parts, and you need to ensure it’s all mounted as straight as possible. They provide templates, but i’d also suggest using a plumb line (a weight on a bit of string) to check its vertical before mounting. This gate is great into wood on each side, I’m not however sure I’d trust it into a plaster wall with plugs. The main latch seems a little weak on intial opening, but is fine when mounted, just be sure not to lose the parts (the spring for example) when opening it up. Not recommended as a gate to just open up and mount, it’s going to take a bit of work.In use, it’s ok but slightly more work than a normal gate – due to having to lift out the gate rather than just swing. It also wont automatically close and lock – you must make sure to do this yourself.

This gate is perfect for narrow openings. You can install it so that it opens in or out or put the stopper in to prevent it from swinging any one way. Note that it won’t lock shut from a deft swing like some might do, you do have to purposefully close the gate by lifting it into the catch. But it is a fairly easy one-handed operation to open / close it. It also fits quite comfortably below a (my) door handle so quite handy. The main watch-it I’d say is that the gate swings very freely so I’ve stuck some foam padding at the bottom to buffer any slams against the wall.Originally I was looking for a pressure fit gate but the basic frames that usually house the gate doors just tend to take up up too much space, and there’s always the annoying trip bar st the base. If you don’t mind screwing into the wall / door frame then this gate is much better (I can’t compare against other fixed gates, though most were too wide for my 69cm wide door frame). And dead simple to remove the gate altogether just leaving the wall fixings. Now it’s up, I find it quite discrete, if left open as the gate is not at all thick or bulky as there is no handle mounted onto the swing part of the gate. The release mechanism is all part of the wall mount. As others have commented the 8 wood screws that come with the gate are really short so do replace them with bigger ones to give a more robust feel. I didn’t even bother with the short ones provided. With longer screws (I used 4mm x 35mm wood screws) the gate feels really solid though I won’t be letting my child stand on the gate. (Rawl plugs would also need to be sourced if mounting into anything other than wood)The installation instructions (photo included) aren’t toooo bad though I appreciate others’ comments that they weren’t especially easy to follow. I’ve attached a few notes over the instructions in one of the review pictures that might help. One thing to note is that tiny plastic piece included is a stopper to prevent the gate opening in one direction. I put mine in so that he gate can only swing away from the door (can see this in picture of locking clasp on right hand side). Just that it is not immediately obvious in the instructions what the bit is for.
